The chronological CV

A chronological CV is the most popular (common) format candidates use in writing their CV. This format usually focuses on the candidate’s personal address, education, and work history (in reverse chronological order i.e starting from the most recent job first).

How Chronological CV is structured.

  • Your personal profile. ( name and contact details )
  • Your personal profile. ( starting from most to least recent job)
  • Your career history must be in reverse chronological order unless you are a graduate or you have very little work experience, and in this case, it may require to start with education and qualifications.
  • Your education and qualification.
  • Your professional membership
  • Other information, then
  • Your interest.

The Chronological CV has some advantages and disadvantages which you must carefully read and understand.

Advantages Of Chronological CV

This kind of CV    particularly useful for those applying within the same industry, as it will demonstrate your career progression. And it is the favorite format for most employers who simply want to be able to identify the role and responsibility in each job.

If you do not have many achievements or significant highlights across your career, taking a job-by-job approach can detail your main responsibilities and take away the emphasis from key achievement which is more expected in the functional CV.

Disadvantages Of Chronological CV

A Chronological CV will make the gapes in your employment which you would not like to highlight to be more obvious. And also, if you are changing direction a chronological CV may not be so relevant to a recruiter who will be more concerned about the transferable skills that you are bringing rather than the details of your experience in an unrelated sector.

The Functional CV

The Functional CV is unlike chronological CV. This format places emphasis on your skills, credentials, and accomplishment over the course of all the job held, rather than the chronology of your employment to date. Most recruiters require that a functional CV accompany a chronological one so that their key skills and events can be clearly identified.

How Functional CV is structured.

Functional CV typically starts with a personal profile which highlights the achievement, skills and personal qualities which a person posses. This is followed by a succession of sections, each relating to a different skill or ability. And it should be ordered in decreasing order of importance.

Instead of focusing on any particular job, you should describe your experience entirely since you are not detailing any specific job. This means you can also include any skills or experience gained in voluntary or unpaid work.

Advantages of a functional CV

If you have changed jobs frequently or your work experience is a combination of seemingly unrelated posts, or if you have several career gaps, a functional CV will help place emphasis on what you have to offer as a whole rather your career progression.

If you are a very matured applicant, a functional CV will take the spotlight away from your age. And if you are also changing the industry, a functional CV will help the recruiter focus on your transferable skill.

Disadvantages  of a functional CV

Most employers do not really like this type of CV, they prefer to clearly see what the candidate has done. And it also raises questions around whether the candidate is trying to hide something.

And if you do not have much work experience, you may struggle to highlight achievement in a separate section.

The Combined CV

This kind of CV format follows both the chronological and the functional format, which makes the CV slightly longer than normal. The longevity notwithstanding, the combined CV offers the best of both chronological and functional CV.

Advantages

This is a perfect format if you have a  strong career progression with many achievements. It also enables you to sell your strength as well as your experience

 Disadvantages

Combined type of CV is lengthier than the functional and chronological CV, so it may actually put off some employers. It is also not suitable for those with little experience or achievement, as well as not suitable for candidates with employment gaps.

NOTE: Unless functional resume conveys your suitability significantly better than the other types, a chronological or combined format is suggested for entry-level positions. So it is advised that you don’t make use of a functional resume unless your employer specifically requests that format.
